Responsible Gambling
At 99as, we believe gambling should always be a form of entertainment — never a financial lifeline or a source of stress. This page covers everything Pakistani users need to know to keep their play safe, informed and within healthy limits.
Why Responsible Gambling Matters to 99as
99as is an informational and educational platform — we do not operate a casino or sportsbook. But we understand that the content we publish influences how Pakistani users think about, approach and engage with online gambling. That makes responsible gambling guidance genuinely important to us, not just a page we are required to have.
Gambling is widespread in the context of sports culture across Pakistan — from cricket matches during ICC tournaments and PSL T20 nights in Lahore and Karachi to international football and UFC events. We know that for many users, sports betting is a leisure activity they enjoy. Our job is to ensure they have access to clear, honest information about the risks involved and the tools available to keep it under control.
The principles on this page apply whether you have never placed a bet, or whether you are a regular player reviewing your habits. There is no shame in seeking information about responsible gambling — in fact, it is the sign of a thoughtful, self-aware bettor.
We also remind all users that online gambling operates in a legally sensitive environment in Pakistan. The Prevention of Gambling Act 1977 restricts gambling activities in Pakistan, and being of legal age alone does not make online gambling lawful. Users must comply with the laws applicable in their own jurisdiction. 99as does not claim Pakistani government authorisation for any gambling activity and does not provide legal advice.
Adults Only Access
This platform is strictly for individuals aged 18 years and above — or the higher minimum age required by the laws of your jurisdiction or any operator/licence jurisdiction you engage with. Access by minors is strictly prohibited. If you are under 18, please leave this platform now.
The Golden Rules of Safe Play
- Gamble only with money you can afford to lose completely
- Set a session time limit before you start and stick to it
- Never gamble to recover money you have already lost
- Do not borrow money — from Easypaisa, JazzCash, banks or family — to fund gambling
- Take regular breaks and never gamble when stressed, upset or impaired
- Accept that the house edge means gambling is not a sustainable income strategy
Responsible Gambling Tools Explained
Reputable online operators offer a range of tools to help users manage their gambling activity. Here is what each tool does and why it matters.
Deposit Limits
A deposit limit restricts the total amount you can add to your account over a set period — daily, weekly or monthly. Expressed in PKR terms (e.g., PKR 5,000 per week), a deposit limit is one of the most effective tools for keeping spending within a budget you have pre-decided when you are thinking clearly. Responsible operators apply requested reductions immediately; increases typically take effect after a cooling-off period.
Loss Limits
A loss limit caps the amount you can lose within a defined time frame. Unlike a deposit limit, a loss limit accounts for winnings being re-wagered — it tracks net losses directly. If you reach your limit, the platform should prevent further play for the remainder of the period. Setting a meaningful loss limit in advance — before a PSL match or any event you plan to bet on — is a practical way to protect yourself from chasing losses in the heat of the moment.
Session Time Limits
Time limits cap how long you can remain logged in to an operator's platform within a single session. When the time is up, the platform logs you out automatically. This tool is valuable because time passes quickly during exciting sporting events or slot sessions — many users genuinely lose track of how long they have been playing. Setting a session limit before you start removes this risk entirely.
Reality Checks
A reality check is a periodic on-screen notification that interrupts your play to remind you how long you have been gambling, how much you have won or lost in the session, and to prompt you to decide whether to continue. Appearing every 15, 30 or 60 minutes (configurable on responsible platforms), reality checks break the cycle of absorbed play and restore conscious awareness of your activity.
Cooling-Off Periods
A cooling-off period (sometimes called a "take a break" feature) temporarily suspends access to your account for a fixed duration — typically ranging from 24 hours to several weeks — at your request. During this period you cannot deposit, bet or play. Cooling-off is useful when you recognise that your gambling has become more frequent than you intended but you are not ready for full self-exclusion.
Self-Exclusion
Self-exclusion is the most powerful responsible gambling tool available. It closes your account and prevents you from re-registering on the same platform for a minimum period — commonly 6 months, 1 year, 5 years or permanently. Operators with robust responsible gambling programmes are required to honour self-exclusion requests promptly and must not use marketing communications to encourage excluded players to return. If you feel you cannot control your gambling, self-exclusion is the right step.
How to Access These Tools on Any Operator Platform
Most licensed online betting and casino operators make responsible gambling tools available through the account settings or a dedicated "Responsible Gambling" or "Safer Gambling" section. While the exact location varies by platform, here is a general guide to finding these tools.
Remember: setting limits takes just a few minutes. Reviewing them periodically — perhaps before each cricket season or PSL campaign — ensures they remain appropriate for your current financial situation.
If you cannot find responsible gambling tools on a platform you are considering, that is itself a significant warning sign. Reputable licensed operators are required to make these tools accessible. If a platform makes limits difficult to find or discourages their use, we recommend choosing a different operator.
Step 1 — Log In to Your Account
Navigate to your account settings, usually accessible via a profile icon or hamburger menu in the top corner of the operator's app or website.
Account SettingsStep 2 — Find the Responsible Gambling Section
Look for a section labelled "Responsible Gambling", "Safer Gambling", "Player Protection" or "My Limits". It may also appear under "Security" or "Account Management".
Safer Play MenuStep 3 — Set Your Limits
Choose the limits you want to apply — deposit, loss, wager or session time. Enter your desired PKR amount or time duration. Reductions take effect immediately; increases are subject to a reflection period.
Set in PKR or TimeStep 4 — Self-Exclude if Needed
If you want to stop gambling entirely, select the self-exclusion option. Choose your preferred period. The operator must close your account promptly and cannot market to you during the exclusion period.
Minimum 6 MonthsRecognising Problem Gambling
Problem gambling can affect anyone. Recognising the warning signs early — in yourself or someone close to you — makes it far easier to address before serious harm occurs. The following signs may indicate that gambling has become problematic.
Spending more money on gambling than you intended to, or more than you can comfortably afford to lose
Continuing to gamble in an attempt to win back money you have already lost ("chasing losses")
Thinking about gambling constantly — planning your next session during work, family time or while watching cricket matches
Feeling irritable, anxious or restless when you are not gambling or when you try to stop
Hiding your gambling activity from family members, friends or colleagues in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi or elsewhere
Borrowing money — through personal loans, credit cards, Easypaisa, JazzCash or from family — specifically to fund gambling
Neglecting work, study, family responsibilities or personal health because of time or money spent on gambling
Feeling guilt, shame or distress about your gambling behaviour but feeling unable to stop
Gambling to escape problems, manage stress, deal with depression, or cope with difficult emotions
Making repeated unsuccessful attempts to cut back on or stop gambling despite wanting to do so
Experiencing financial difficulties — unpaid bills, difficulty covering household expenses — that are directly linked to gambling spending
Needing to bet increasingly larger sums of money — higher PKR amounts than before — to feel the same level of excitement
Recognising these signs does not mean you have a severe gambling disorder. It means your gambling behaviour is worth examining honestly. Many people who identify with two or three of these signs are able to regain control by setting firm limits, taking a break, or speaking to a trusted person. If you identify with five or more, we strongly encourage you to seek professional support.
Ask Yourself These Questions
Answer honestly. These questions are for personal reflection only — your responses are not collected or stored by 99as.
The following questions are adapted from widely used problem-gambling screening tools. Answering "yes" to several of these questions may indicate that your gambling behaviour warrants closer attention.
Have you ever bet more than you could really afford to lose?
Have you ever needed to gamble with larger amounts of money to get the same feeling of excitement?
Have you gone back to try to win back money you lost?
Have you ever borrowed money or sold something to get money to gamble with?
Have you felt that you might have a problem with gambling?
Has gambling ever caused you any health problems, including feelings of stress or anxiety?
Have people ever criticised your betting or told you that you had a gambling problem?
Has your gambling ever caused financial problems for you or your household?
Rules for Keeping Gambling Enjoyable
Following these practical guidelines will help you stay in control and ensure gambling remains entertainment rather than a source of harm.
- Set a strict budget. Decide the maximum PKR amount you can afford to lose before you start. Treat it as money spent on entertainment — like a ticket to a PSL match — not as an investment.
- Use a separate account. Keep your gambling funds in a separate account or wallet from your household expenses, rent and essential bills. This makes overspending visually obvious.
- Set a time limit. Decide how long you will play before you start and use your phone alarm or the operator's session time limit tool to enforce it.
- Never chase losses. If you have hit your loss limit for the day, stop. The next session will not undo today's losses — but it can create new ones on top.
- Take regular breaks. Step away from the screen at regular intervals. Use breaks to eat, drink water, move around and reset your mental state before deciding whether to continue.
- Gamble sober and clear-headed. Gambling when you are tired, emotionally upset, or affected by any substance increases the risk of poor decisions. Save play for when you are calm and focused.
- Keep gambling in perspective. It is one leisure activity among many. Maintain your other interests — cricket with friends, family time, hobbies — so that gambling does not become your primary pastime.
- Know when to stop. If you reach your budget limit, your time limit, or you simply stop enjoying yourself — stop. There is always another day and another match to bet on.
Support Resources for Problem Gambling
If you or someone you know is struggling with gambling, reaching out for support is a courageous and important step. The following types of support are available — please note that 99as does not operate any of these services and recommends verifying contact details independently.
Talk to Someone You Trust
Opening up to a family member, close friend or community elder about gambling concerns is often the first and most important step. In Pakistani society, family networks are strong — reaching out to those close to you can provide both emotional support and practical accountability.
Mental Health Professionals
Problem gambling is recognised internationally as a behavioural disorder with effective treatments. Psychologists and psychiatrists with experience in behavioural addictions can provide structured therapeutic support, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) approaches. Mental health services are available in major Pakistani cities including Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.
International Support Organisations
Internationally recognised responsible gambling organisations such as GamCare, Gamblers Anonymous and BeGambleAware offer self-help resources, live chat support and treatment referrals accessible online to users in Pakistan. These resources are informational — verify all service details directly with the organisation concerned.
Operator Self-Exclusion
Contact the customer support team of any operator platform you use and request immediate self-exclusion. Licensed operators are obligated to process this request promptly. Self-exclusion closes your account and prevents marketing contact for the agreed period — a minimum of six months in most licence jurisdictions.
A Note on Support in Pakistan
Dedicated problem-gambling helplines comparable to those in some other countries are not yet widely established in Pakistan. However, mental health awareness is growing and organisations in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi provide psychological support services that can assist with behavioural issues including problematic gambling. We encourage users in Pakistan to speak with a qualified mental health professional if they are concerned about their gambling behaviour. This is not legal advice, and 99as does not endorse any specific service provider.
